Cavoodles are one of the most popular designer dog breeds in Australia, but if you’ve been researching Cavoodles, you’ve probably come across terms like F1, F2, and F1b. These terms refer to different generations of Cavoodles, which can affect their coat type, shedding level, and temperament.
So, what do these generations mean, and how do they differ?
Understanding Cavoodle Generations
The “F” in F1, F2, and F1b stands for “filial generation”, which simply means how far the Cavoodle is from its original Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parents.
Each generation has unique characteristics, depending on the percentage of Poodle vs. Cavalier genes.
F1 Cavoodles (First Generation)
50% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + 50% Poodle
Most common and popular generation
Typically has a wavy fleece coat
Generally low-shedding
Best for: Owners looking for a classic Cavoodle with a mix of Cavalier’s affectionate nature and Poodle’s intelligence.
F1 Cavoodles are the first-generation cross between a purebred Cavalier and a purebred Poodle. They come with all the health benefits of crossing two pure bred dogs with different genetics.
F1b Cavoodles (First Generation Backcross)
75% Poodle + 25% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
More likely to have a curly coat, however there may be 1 or 2 fleece coats in a litter
Minimal shedding – great for allergy sufferers
Slightly more energetic due to higher Poodle influence
Requires more grooming due to curlier fur
Best for: Owners with allergies or those looking for a more curly coat.
F1b Cavoodles are a mix between an F1 Cavoodle and a Poodle. Since they have more Poodle genetics (75%), they are more likely to inherit a curly coat that sheds very little. This makes them the best option for allergy sufferers, but they require more frequent grooming.
F2 Cavoodles (Second Generation)
Mix of two F1 Cavoodles (50% Cavalier, 50% Poodle)
Coat type can be more unpredictable (straight, wavy, or curly)
Some may shed more than F1 or F1b
Temperament remains friendly and affectionate
Best for: Owners who love surprises! F2 Cavoodles can have any coat type, making them a bit of a genetic lottery.
F2 Cavoodles are the result of breeding two F1 Cavoodles together. Because genetics don’t always split evenly, some F2 Cavoodles may look more like Cavaliers with straighter coats, while others may take after the Poodle. Some F2s might shed a little more, depending on which genes they inherit.
